From your mouth to God's ears

Every family has one of those kids. You know the one.

In our family, that kid is Preston. He's the one who, at age two, stopped up the bathroom sinks and turned on the water just to see what would happen. The one who, at age three, had to be taken to the Emergency Room because he just had to hop out of the tub and run across the floor to get something. The one who, at age five, sustained second- and third-degree burns on his leg after he pulled his bedside lamp into bed with him. . . then removed the lampshade so he could have a little more reading light. . . then fell asleep.

You know the one.

The kid who provokes more prayers for his safety than your other kids combined. And at the same time, he's got a very special place in your heart.

Well, my Preston is almost grown up now. Here's a recent photo of him:

Though he's a giant of a young man now, he's still the one who can really pull at my heartstrings. He's the one who, when his little brother's fish died, retrieved a $5 bill from his wallet, handed it to his brother, and said, "I'm your fish insurance."

Last week was Doppelganger Week on Facebook. Did you participate? I had to ask my kids "What's a Doppelganger?" Simply put, a Doppelganger is a double. Lots of people I know swapped their Facebook profile photos for a photo of someone that they supposedly look like, or at least someone that other people tell them they look like. One beautiful friend of mine replaced her photo with one of Emma Watson--and at first I thought it was just a picture of my friend from high school.

Anyway, Preston and I were talking about Doppelganger Week, about what famous person he bears resemblance to. After he chose a double for himself, I said, "I can't imagine who I would post as my Doppelganger."

And without missing a beat, this son of mine replied, "Jesus."

That boy could give lessons in How to Make Your Mama Cry.

Would that it were so, Preston. Would that it were so.

  1. Made more than his mama cry! What a sweet guy.

By the way, I have one of those boys. He's been to the hospital more than everyone else in our household combined. Oh, those angels get worked overtime on him.

In the midst of all the mayhem I haven't been over to your place and oh what fun I've had catching up. LOVE the clock. Congratulations on 25 years {clearly you got married when you were 10}! And Preston is just, well, precious. You are blessed, my friend.

  20. His Image In Your Countenance :
with no apparent beauty that man should him desire
he was the promised savior to purify with fire
    the world despised his plainness
but those who followed him found love and light and purity
    a beauty from within

have you received his image in your countenance?
does the light of christ shine in your eyes?
will he know you when he comes again because you will be like him?
when he sees you will the father know his child?

we seek for light and learning as followers of christ
that all may see his goodness reflected in our lives
when we receive his fulness and lose desire for sin
    we radiate his perfect love
    a beauty from within

have you received his image in your countenance?
does the light of christ shine in your eyes?
will he know you when he comes again because you will be like him?
when he sees you will the father know his child?

the ways of man may tempt us
    and some will be deceived
preferring worldly beauty, forgetting truth recieved
but whisperings of the spirit remind us once again
that lasting beauty, pure and clear
    must come from deep within

have you received his image in your countenance?
does the light of christ shine in your eyes?
will he know you when he comes again because you will be like him?
when he sees you will the father know his child?
by his everlasting image in your eyes

These are the words to a beautiful song by Felicia Sorensen. This is what your son is talking about.
People say when a married couple has been together for so long they start to look alike. I don't know if that's true, but I do think when I see one of the couple, I think of the other. Like they are inseparable. That's how I want to be- inseparable from the Lord. When others see me, maybe they could think of Him.
I know this is LONG, but I just had to share these special lyrics. Hope you enjoy them~

  21. Lisa! Thank you so much for sharing that song with me. I'd never heard it. But that's what I want. His image in my countenance. It's my prayer.

  22. Amen, Richella! What a thoughtful and kind young man you have raised! The countenance of Christ...yes. That's what I want too. And like your son, we do see it in you. Your gentle, gracious thought-full words speak peace to our hearts. Blessings to you today~
