Q: What does "Erin Go Bragh" mean?
A: Ireland forever!
I drew a name out of a hat for the little prize I promised. And the winner is:
Amanda from Serenity Now!
Amanda, please email me your address and I'll ship your prize right out to you.
Q: Should I put on my English teacher hat once a week?
A: Judging by the comments I received yesterday, I guess the answer is yes. Your responses were all positive, so I'll do it! Each Thursday, I'll unpack some point of English language usage that tends to be troublesome for writers.
Please let me know if there's something in particular you'd like for me to address. Believe it or not, I really enjoy answering questions about grammar. (I know--that's weird. But it's true.) So if you'd like for me to write about a particular grammatical issue, please tell me. Or if you just have a question about grammar, shoot me an email; I'll be glad to help if I can.
And just for the record, here's the English teacher hat I'll be donning:
My can-do hat from last fall! Guess I need to be on the lookout for a springy version. Y'all let me know if you spot a cute hat somewhere. After all, there's no rule that says an English teacher can't have good accessories.
Have a wonderful weekend!
I love you in that hat :) just stick a shamrock in it and it will be perfect for march ;)
ReplyDeleteYou were above me in SITS blog roll, looking around and you have a lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteGrammar....If anyone watched the Bachelor, please tell Vienna that I's is not a word. As in He and I's future!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not, is it?
I am all about grammar too!!! This is exciting. I'm looking forward to it. How nerdy. hehe My grammar pet peeve is when someone says "this is a picture of my mom and I." You don't say "this is a picture of I." You say "a picture of me" so it would be a picture of "my mom and me". Right? :)
ReplyDeleteI teach english as a foreign language, and will be very interested to see what you come up with. There's nothing like blogging to make you sharpen up, is there? My problem at the moment seems to be punctuation, especially brackets. Which comes first, the closed bracket or the full stop? What about if it's a question mark? Any advice?
ReplyDeleteYes, Autumn Mist.
ReplyDeleteWhat you call brackets we call quotation marks; what you call a full stop we call a period.
Commas and full stops go inside the brackets. Question marks go inside the brackets only if the quotation is in fact a question. If the sentence is a question but the words in brackets are not themselves the question, then the question mark goes outside the brackets.
Examples:
"Can I have a cookie, Mom?"
"Yes, dear, you may have a cookie."
Have you read that article called "The Lost Tools of Learning"?
Hope this helps!
I LOVE that hat! Can't wait to see your spring version.
ReplyDeleteXOXOXO
~Amanda
LOVE your hat, and I LOVE that I won. ;) Excited to read more about grammar. I realize that just exposed me as a huge nerd.
ReplyDeleteGrammar is a peeve of mine too, which is not to say that I know all the rules, or do everything correctly.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that totally bugs me is the use of apostrophes to make a word plural, as in "How many apple's are in the bag?". I've been noticing that a lot in the last few years; it seems like it suddenly became a trend.
I would love some grammar lessons. And now that I know it's your talent, I am expecting your help on my blog. :)
ReplyDeleteIf you ever read one of my posts, and I have a huge grammar mistake, you better tell me!!! That's what friends are for, right? But if you find more than 5 mistakes in one post at a time, break it to me gently. Okay?
:)
Have a great weekend!
Thank you for telling me about the keys Richella! I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment on the subject. I will check out your post and visit Michaels very soon.
ReplyDeleteYour are so kind about my recent weight loss! You just make my day. It's funny but I still feel so *overweight* inside. It's amazing how most of us woman are always so insecure about our looks as a whole. Sigh...I know you posted on a subject like this recently and I could definitely relate to it while reading it. Here I am crying all of a sudden for no reason. Silly me! I know deep down I'm so much healthier and look so much better these days but I'm not quite ready for an entire new wardrobe or new photos yet. I'm getting to a better place slowly but surely. I should post on this subject. Hmmmm....:)
My wheels are turning. *Smiles*
~Blessings my friend. ~Melissa
I already have a question in mind! Email coming soon...
