I had great plans for this week. Unfortunately, my throat had other plans.
After a visit to my physician's office yesterday, I have an official diagnosis: viral pharyngitis. Prescription: rest, anti-inflammatory medication, lots of fluids. If I'm honest, I'll admit that in some ways I would been really glad if it had been strep throat--then I could have just taken antibiotics and felt better!
So here I've been, forcing fluids trying to rest--and I've had a bit of a revelation:
Pain makes me really myopic.
Pain begs for me to focus on the thing that's hurting, and when I do that, I lose awareness of everything that's not hurting. So the very thing that would be most helpful--getting my mind off the pain--is the thing I struggle to do.
I'm trying now to get my focus off myself and my sore throat and back on all that's good and beautiful.
What about you? Does anything ever make you lose your focus?

I am SO sorry that you are sick! That sounds very unpleasant. I hope you start to feel better soon. (Btw, myopic is such a great word...I applaud your vocabulary even when ill!) :)
ReplyDeletePoor, sugar!!
ReplyDeleteI know how pain does hurt (duh)!
I was diagnosed a week and a half ago with Shingles AND a UTI (and I have never had one before)! Yeah, so lots of pain and lots of antibiotics and lots of cranberry juice and toilet paper.
I called on God a lot, LOL!
The rash is healed and so is the UTI and I am regaining my focus.
So will you.
Lord, heal Richella. Give her rest. Amen.
Bummer. So sorry you're not feeling well. Nice chance to just rest, though!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you are sick! Especially since the cure is not within 24 hours! Yes, I lose focus with a busy schedule. I become so schedule driven, that my life loses all focus and joy. Luckily, my family get 12 days at the beach every fall to refocus. We are on day 9 of our stay. I start every morning of the balcony overlooking the ocean, sipping my coffee, Bible open and reconnecting with the Lord. Such PEACE! Life to the full, Melissa
ReplyDeletesometimes i think everything makes me lose focus! but i am sorry you are sick... and i am actually with you on the strep :) give me something that can be fixed lickety-split.
ReplyDeletebut rest... heart & mind... and throat! xoxo
Oh, Richella, I am so sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I pray that you will be back on your feet soon!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that you are sick-no fun. Take care and get better soon!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question....chaos makes me lose my focus. Granted my idea of true chaos is probably different than most people because I live with 7 other people. But there are times when everone is talking or making noise....that my brain just cannot focus and my mouth usually cannot be kind. I hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteI am writing a doctoral research paper on imparting Grace to the sick and dying. I agree with the comments about myopic vision. It is a revelation when we realize how pain affects every thought. I am looking for any more information or even references about trying to impart Grace to someone who is sick and or dying. I like the readers comments here.
