Grace at Home No. 493

Hello, friends!

Thank you for all your encouraging comments about my son's surgery. We believe he is making good progress. The post-surgical time was much more difficult than we expected, so we are grateful for him finally to be feeling stronger.

Meanwhile, I'm so glad to welcome you to the Grace at Home party, where we celebrate all the ways we make our homes places of grace and beauty. Here are some highlights from last week's party.

Now that we're squarely in the middle of winter but Christmas is a month behind us, are you struggling to make your home feel cozy? Shelley from Calypso in the Country has some great ideas for you.

If you're not quite ready to cozy things up and still need to declutter after the holidays, Julie from Filling the Jars can help with a decluttering action plan.

Planning ahead for Valentine's Day? Pam from Everyday Living has some beautiful tablescapes to inspire you.

Want to make a Valentine's Day gift for someone (or for your own decor)? Ann from Apple Street Cottage shows you how she made these darling denim hearts.

Need a new dinner recipe? Arlene from Flour on My Face shares a taco soup recipe I want to try.

Thank you to everyone who joined last week's party!

Grace at Home No. 492

Last Thursday morning, I was in the Surgical Waiting Room at Duke Hospital. My son had surgery on Thursday and is now at home with his dad and me. His surgeon was pleased with the way the procedure went, but my son is still in a lot of pain.

If you've ever cared for a family member in the days immediately after a major surgery, you know that it's often a one-step-forward-two-steps-back progress. We're praying that we're about to turn the corner and experience two-steps-forward-one-step-back progress.

I posted this on Instagram, mostly because I needed it:

I think we often forget this. We want to be strong for our loved ones, but we must have rest in order to be strong. So I'm trying to heed my own words:

Meanwhile, I know many of you are off to a great start this new year, and I'd love to know what you've been up to. So I'm glad to welcome you to the Grace at Home party, where we celebrate all the ways we make our homes places of grace and beauty.

Grace at Home: Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Just like that, 2022 is part of the history books. What a year!

2022 was one of the most challenging years I've ever lived. In some ways the year ended up with a bang. First of all, all my kids were here for Christmas—and my grandson! Having an almost-2-year-old in the house is enough to spread a lot of Christmas cheer.

Unfortunately, though, the end up of the year brought viruses with it. I got sick on December 26 and spent most of the next week in bed. I finally saw my doctor, who tested me for strep, flu, and Covid. Those tests were all negative; apparently I just have one of the hundreds of other viruses that cause upper respiratory infections. I'm still struggling with a nagging cough. Ugh!

But even with all the challenges, I'm still here. We've faced so many challenges the past few months, but my precious family members are still alive. My son will be having surgery next week; I appreciate your prayers for him.

How about you? I pray that your holidays were full of love and goodness. And I'm so glad you're here for the Grace at Home party, where we pause to celebrate all the ways we make our homes places of grace and beauty.
